Indiana Jones: The Complete Adventures [Blu-ray]

If you grew up in the 80s, you grew up with Indiana Jones, whether you knew it or not. Elements of all three of the movies were everywhere in pop culture, from "Why did it have to be snakes?" to the rolling boulder to the monkey brains, and you didn't even have to watch the movies to know and revere the man with the hat and the whip. But watching the films themselves, especially as an adult, is like pulling apart all the pieces that make up the legend-- does he still stand so tall when you spend 8 hours watching him onscreen?

The Movie: star rating

Lucky for anyone going through The Complete Adventures, it all starts with Raiders of the Lost Ark, still one of the most fully satisfying and well-executed adventure movies of all time. From the opening scene on it's pure myth-making, introducing us to a man who knows how to get out of every problem, who shows strength in the face of certain death, and who isn't afraid to admit he's a badass who can't deal with the sight of a snake. The thing moves forward like a bullet, hopping across continents and through one obstacle after another; there's no time to pause for character development or emotion, so they toss it right in there with the action, a combination that makes every scene in the movie unmissable.

We think of Raiders as the template for the entire franchise, but what's surprising about revisiting Temple of Doom is how eager it is to shake that off; when it matches the Paramount logo to a mountain, just like in the first one, it's a metal mountain on a gong in a nightclub. Instead of kicking things off with an action scene, it's a giant tap-dancing number (well, the action starts up not much later). And while Raiders was all about on-the-ground fighting and scrapping, Temple of Doom's opening act culminates in the most physically improbable escape imaginable, our heroes going from a crashing plane to a raft in raging rapids without a scratch. But the eagerness to distance the second movie from the first also results in some colossal missteps, like the irritating kid sidekick and Kate Capshaw's love interest-- you never miss Marion Ravenwood more than you do an hour into Temple.

Last Crusade, on the other hand, arrives like the jolly half-brother of the original Raiders, with enough of the same DNA to feel familiar but a more cheerful and energetic spirit that makes it feel new. Watching it soon after Raiders points out how similar the movies are, but Crusade does improve on the original in parts, especially with the ending that plays like the grown-up version of the Raiders opening. You probably need the Temple interlude to be so grateful for the return to form in Crusade, but the third film is still the one I'm most likely to return to over and over-- what can I say, given the choice, I'll take the Sean Connery one.

And then, of course, there's Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, the 2008 late-arriving sequel that nobody really asked for, and that has so many godawful moments that it's far too easy to forget the parts of it that work. Watching the opening scene it's easy feel the same high hopes you had in the theater, and then Indiana Jones shares a moment with a CGI gopher, and wheels start to fall off. There's just too much in the movie, and in a series never exactly known for minimalism, that's surprisingly damaging. Every time Crystal Skull pulls off something that works, it finds five more things that don't; luckily on Blu-ray, you can just fast-forward through the parts of the movie that are awful and make it the Indiana Jones sequel you actually wanted.

The Disc: dvd

All three of the original films have been meticulously restored, not unlike the process that went into the stunning recent Jaws release. It's impressive how much the effects in the original three films hold up in HD, and equally dismaying to see how much the Crystal Skull effects have aged in 4 short films-- that one is the least likely to hold up in the bunch. The outdoor scenes in all three films benefit the most from the transfer-- scenes like the Egyptian marketplace in Raiders or young Indy's train battle in Crusade are spectacular on Blu-ray.

The set is laid out like a book, with each film on an individual disc within a cardboard "page," and a fifth disc containing the extras. The individual discs contain only the film and some original trailers, and the fifth disc, to be honest, is pretty disappointingly short on bonus features. Pretty much all of the good stuff is crammed into a series of documentaries, with "On The Set Of Raiders of the Lost Ark" being the only new one. Luckily it's also fantastic, containing a bunch of behind-the-scenes footage from the set shown in the order of the film's action, with lots of insight into Spielberg and Ford's process of working together. At the end, somewhat incongruously, there's a reel of bloopers and deleted scenes from all four films, though shown in a montage with the score as the only sound. Why they didn't split up all that stuff into its own feature, I have no idea.

There are also separate "Making Of" documentaries for all four features, including one made in 1981 about Raiders-- all were released previously, but hey, if you've never seen it, it's new to you. All of the docs are crammed with information, of course, but it's always nice on a splashy disc release like this to be able to skim the info on your own time, rather than watch a series of docs that may or may not feel redundant, depending on your level of Indy fandom. The "Behind the Scenes" section contains even more info on all the technical elements, but again feels a bit like a jumble-- there had to be a better way to arrange and guide us through this wealth of information.

To own all of the Indiana Jones films on Blu-ray is enticement enough to pick up this set, and to be fair, there's a lot of information on that bonus disc, even if it's not especially well organized. The films have definitely never looked better, and since the films themselves are infinitely rewatchable and bonus features wear out, owning the set is worth it to just be able to travel to Indy's world, in beautiful HD and on demand.

Sep 12, 2011 by Brian Gallagher
Fantasy football provides an outlet for good-natured competition and camaraderie between friends and colleagues, but that's not always the case. Deception, one-upmanship, and win-at-all-costs mentality rule the day on the virtual gridiron and then extend into personal relationships, marriages and the workplace, in The League: The Complete Second Season, arriving October 4 from Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment.

The League: Season Two Blu-ray

The League features an ensemble cast of rising actors and comedians. Mark Duplass (Humpday) plays Pete, the perennial league champ who is struggling to become an adult. Stephen Rannazzisi (Paul Blart: Mall Cop) is Kevin, a happily married father and commissioner of the league. Nick Kroll (Get Him to the Greek) plays Ruxin, who believes he is the smartest of the group but can't figure out why he can't seem to win the league championship. Andre, played by Paul Scheer (Human Giant), has continued to be the punching bag of the group since their high school days - a fact that hasn't changed despite the fact he is now a successful plastic surgeon. Jonathan Lajoie is Taco, Kevin's little brother, a part-time musician and full-time stoner with little interest in fantasy other than hanging with his buddies (whom he struggles to remember). Katie Aselton (The Freebie) plays Jenny, Kevin's wife and also his not-so-secret better half in the fantasy league. Nadine Velazquez (My Name Is Earl) plays Ruxin's wife Sofia, whom he is completely infatuated with ... and afraid of.

The League was created by the husband-and-wife team of Jeff Schaffer (Curb Your Enthusiasm, Seinfeld) and Jackie Marcus Schaffer (Disturbia, Eurotrip) who serve as executive producers and directors. The series is produced by FX Productions.

EXCLUSIVE: Samantha Newark Talks Jem and The Holograms: The Truly Outrageous Complete Series

Sep 29, 2011 by B. Alan Orange
Samantha Newark Talks Jem and The Holograms: The Truly Outrageous Complete Series

Jem fans rejoice! On October 11th, Shout Factory is finally releasing all sixty-five episodes of the popular animated series with JEM And The Holograms: The Truly Outrageous Complete Series DVD. This is especially cool, as a lot of the Jem Season 3 episodes have not been seen in a long time. To celebrate this awesome 11-disc set, we caught up with Jerrica herself, voice actress Samantha Newark, to reminisce about the popular series and to find out what lies ahead for this screamingly popular toy and cartoon franchise.

Hold onto your hats! Here is our truly outrageous conversation.

What happened with the third season that we only see about half of the episodes that we do in Seasons 1 and 2? And why have these Season 3 episodes been so hard for fans to get until now?

Samantha Newark: That is a really good question. I don't know. That has always been kind of baffling. Thank goodness for Shout Factory, and redeeming the rights again. Because those episodes might have stayed lost. I'm sorry, but I don't have an answer for that one! I wasn't up to speed on what happened with that. When the first DVD came out, I had no idea that we weren't getting all of the episodes. I got confused with Season 3. I knew that we had recorded sixty-five episodes all together, but I couldn't remember how they broke them down. The seasons all look the same. So, I'm not sure what the red tape was with that situation. The show had changed hands so many times. It has been a really strange journey for the Jem rights. But I think they finally got it sorted out. Thankfully. That's good.

In watching these shows, its hard to miss that the writer's name is right out there in front, in bold, underneath the title of each episode. The stories are so well written. As well written as any live action show being produced at that time. And the storylines are so adult in theme. Can you take me through the stories that you guys wanted to hit, especially with this being aimed mostly at girls?

Samantha Newark: That was the work of the brilliant creator, Christy Marx, coming up with the Jem bible. She created all of the characters. She was basically given a contract, and then she had to run with it. She had to create all of these amazing characters. The actors were hired after all of that stuff was in place, and all of the episodes were mapped out, and the storyboards were mapped out. It was the actor's job to bring that to life. I wasn't involved with any of the writing or conceptions of Jem. I was brought in when they were looking for their Jem. I came to this after that was all done.

What was the auditioning process like for Jem? And did you identify with her at the time you were recording these voice tracks? Did any of you rub off on Jem, or vice versa?

Samantha Newark: Oh, my gosh! I feel that I was cast as Jem because I really embodied her essence. I have grown up, obviously, but I was always a really good girl. I prided myself on upholding the Pollyanna archetype my whole life. That is just my nature. When I read for Jem, I thought, "What a great fit. This is so me!" The fact that she was a singer, as well...Though, I didn't end up doing the singing for Jem. But everything she stood for? She was a good girl, she didn't take any crap, and she could stand up for herself. So, yeah...

What was the camaraderie like with the other voice actors? Nowadays, they put each individual in a room by themselves. But back in the 80s, it was a little different. You guys would often record together as a group...

Samantha Newark: Yeah. We were a group. We recorded each episode as a 'recording ensemble'. We literally had a table rehearsal all at the same time, where we would come in and rehearse our script, and highlight our parts. We would sit own with the director, and look at the storyboard artwork, so that we would know what the action was in the scene. Then we would record as a group, with many people on one microphone, taking turns. Then, if you weren't in a scene for a while, you would go and sit in the green room, and try to pay attention to when they needed you back on the mic. It was awesome. You'd get such a great energy, and a dynamic between the actors. Because they are in the room, talking to each other. As opposed to saying your lines into a mic, and then mixing them later.

Probably the most unique thing about the show, which us boys didn't have watching G.I. Joe, or Transformers, is that these characters in Jem are constantly changing their wardrobe. In most weekly animated series, the characters wear the same thing, every day, for an eternity. Even as a kid, that really bothered me. Like Charlie Brown and his yellow shirt...

Samantha Newark: The Flintstones. Yeah, that is what makes them so relatable. Girls change their outfits ten million times. That was true of Jem and Jerrica. Especially since they were rock stars, and they had to go from an interview, to a music video shoot, to a concert...All of these different things. I love how they did the costuming, and drew all of that. It was really cool.

I wanted to ask you more about the writing of the show. It surprises me how adult some of this material is. I guess girls do mature faster than boys. Was it ever shocking for you to see some of these storylines bubbling up in a show that was primarily for tween girls?

Samantha Newark: It is so strange. I guess I watch it from a different perspective. I am reminiscing about being in the studio when I watch an episode. That will probably change once I have sort of relived it again. I will start to focus on other things. I think so much of the adult material was in there, and it went so far over the kids' heads, because they just don't know. They are looking at the car chases, and the fashion shows, and the rock concerts.

The one episode that sticks out in my head is where the father has died, and it's father's day. And one of the girls is trying to come up with this song about her dad, as all of these repressed memories bubble up to the surface. I sat, watching that, thinking, "God, this is pretty heavy stuff for a kids' cartoon that is supposed to be enjoyed after school...It's so profound...Most people, who weren't sitting down to actually watch the show, wrote it off as an advertisement for the toys. And there is clearly a lot more going on here...

Samantha Newark: Yeah. Right. The episodes did get diminished by the people that never watched the show. Jem addressed some pretty heavy stuff. Christy Marx talks about it in the DVD. There was a suicide hotline in one of the episodes. And they got a lot of calls. Kids that watch the show actually called the number, because they were in trouble. You never think that a cartoon is making that kind of impact. But it was really reaching a lot of people in so many different ways. Who knew?

Did you and Britta Phillips, who did all of the singing for Jem on the show, ever get together and figure out how to merge your various talents into this one role?

Samantha Newark: No. I never met Britta Phillips until 2010. I met her at a fan convention. None of the musicians, or any of the songwriters, who were all based out of New York, ever had anything to do with the animation side of it, or the voice over side of it. Which I think is totally bizarre. Now, with the social media world, and the internet, it would be a whole different world today. But we didn't have that when we did Jem. Each group was very isolated in that regard. We are only just now starting to reunite after all of this time.

Are you guys going to have a full fledged reunion? Do you ever discuss going out on the road with Jem?

Samantha Newark: Gosh, I don't know. We've had many different kinds of reunions. In the sense of having these fan conventions. Different people go out for them. I got to meet Christy Marx. I never did meet her while we were doing the show. But I did meet her at a fan convention. It has been these fan conventions, like Jem-Con 2008, that has been bringing us all back together. It would be amazing to do Comic-Con, and have a big panel with all of us reunited. Who knows what's in-store?

I am coming to Jem late as a fan. And I am a fan. I wasn't expecting to find myself so engrossed in each episode...

Samantha Newark: That is so cool. I love to hear that, and I am hearing that more often. It is a really fun cartoon that remains fun for adults, too!

I must have been nine or ten when it originally came out. I am a guy, it just didn't appeal to me at the time. I didn't want to play with a Jem doll. But now that I am watching them, I realize, it has everything that I loved as a kid.

Samantha Newark: You probably couldn't get past the theme song and the pink that was going on. You were all, "Ahhhhh! That is a girl's show!" But yeah, when you watch it, you have all of these male characters, a lot of action. It is a soap opera for kids. But hey, you only know what you know when you are that age. It makes sense that you wouldn't watch it when you were little.

You look like Jem. Did her fashion sense ever reflect on you, or did you reflect on her?

Samantha Newark: It was very serendipitous. When I went into audition, I saw the drawings of what Jem and Jerrica looked like. I thought, "Oh, my gosh! That looks just like me!" It was so weird. It didn't need to be that way, obviously. Because it was voice over work, so they never saw me. But yeah, it is weird that I look like Jem and Jerrica.

Back in the day, did they take you guys to the mall in costume? Did you ever go out and promote the show?

Samantha Newark: That's the thing. I didn't know how big the show was while I was doing it. I never did any press for the show. I do remember that they had a huge party. An opening gala to launch the show. I think Sister Sledge played. It was a big deal. They had it at the Baxter Hotel in Los Angeles. They did throw this big party for everyone involved in the show back then, but, no, we never did any press. I wish we had some photographs of us recording. We don't even have that, which is very weird. It's a moment lost in time.

What about the toys? Did you have a collection of Jem toys from back in the day? Do you still proudly display that stuff in your house?

Samantha Newark: My mom said, during the run of the show, that I should probably get myself a doll. You are Jem! So I did go get one of the dolls. It was a glitter and gold doll. Then, over the years, I have been so lucky. The fans have gifted me with dolls, some of which have custom costumes that they have made. I have three or four of these Jem dolls now. I have a nice little collection.

Has anyone approached you about a live action Jem movie? I would imagine that if they did do a live action film, you'd have to be in it in some capacity...

Samantha Newark: I would love to do a cameo in it. That would be so much fun. The receptionist at Starlight Music. Something cool. No one has said anything about a live action movie, because no one knew what was going on with the franchise. It has been a big mystery, and it still is. I know that Hasbro is revealing something to do with Jem at the New York Comic-Con in a couple of weeks. We are all waiting to see what they have up their sleeve. I am like everybody else. Just waiting to see what happens.

After the success of Transformers and G.I. Joe, and with the surging popularity in Jem right now, I would imagine they have something special planned...

Samantha Newark: I would hope that they kept some of the same writers on board, just to keep the tone of it. Who knows? I'm not sure what they have planned. I thought it would be cool if they did a really cool animated feature film, so that all of the actors could revive their roles. We're all not 85 years old, and we all still sound good. I think it would be really cool.

You still look enough like Jem, and you are young enough, I think you could reprise the role in a live action movie, if they had a comeback...

Samantha Newark: Well, thank you. That would be a lot of fun. I am still pretty young.

When it came to the Transformers, the fans really pushed, and they got Peter Cullen to come back and voice Optimus Prime. Hasbro really listens to their fan base when it comes to properties like Jem.

Samantha Newark: I think they are aware of our connection to the fan base. We just have an awesome rapport. I am sure that they are taking note of that. Who knows? I am not sure. Lets just hope they get on board with a reunion that includes all of us. Perhaps a retrospective? Maybe? They should get us all together so that the fans can enjoy it. It would be really cool.

Do you have an episode that you hold close to your heart? Or one that you think would be a good gateway drug into this wonderful world of Jem?

Samantha Newark: Oh, gosh! That is a really good question. Because I am still doing my homework. I like Out of the Past, because it delves into the backstory of Jerrica's mom. And the death of her mom. One of my favorites is One Jem Too Many, where I get to play a really obnoxious, self-entitled, horrible version of Jem that is an imposter. It is quite fun to watch that, because I forgot that we even did that. I am still catching up on the episodes, so I will have to get back to you on a favorite.

Star Wars: The Complete Saga Blu-ray Changes Revealed!

When Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith hit screens in May of 2005, one of the most derided aspects of the film, a scene that was mocked inscrutably, was the homage to Frankenstein, which saw Anakin Skywalker, transformed into the evil Darth Vader as we know him from the original classic, lumbering off an operating table locked in his new black robotic armor screaming a cartoonish, "Noooooooooooooooo!"

Quite frankly, it made a lot of diehard fans mad. They thought it was ridiculous. Stupid. That it ruined an otherwise serviceable film in a prequel trilogy that is mostly disliked by the older generation of Star Wars enthusiasts. As rumored, and now known as officially true, George Lucas, in his infinite wisdom, has gone back to Star Wars: Episode VI - Return of the Jedi and added this same guttural, pain-laced cry of "Nooooooooo!" to the scene where Darth Vader saves Luke's life, by picking up The Emperor and throwing him into the dark depths of the new Death Star before it is destroyed. What this proves more than anything is: George Lucas is totally f'ing with us.

He has to be. At the age of five or six, most of us thought Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope was a perfect film. We were wrong. Over the years, George Lucas has done plenty of tinkering with all six films in this live-action series, continuing to do so well after their theatrical and home video releases. On September 16th, Star Wars: The Complete Saga Blu-ray will be making its debut. And the creator of this beloved world just couldn't help himself yet again. Like a scab, he just keeps picking at it, making it bleed and puss, and now it will never heel.

We chronicled the technical changes made to this Blu-ray set in early August. At the time, we also told you that George Lucas had gone in and changed some of the actual content of these films. The Force.net has now gone through the entire box set, and has noticed seven major changes to these classic space adventures that may or may not upset fans who were planning to pick up the Blu-ray. Video clips featuring these changes have all come online.

First up, we have two tweaks to Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope. The first one occurs when R2D2 gets zapped by the Jawas. There are now magical rocks that cover his hiding place, which disappear when the Jawas capture him. The second change takes place during Luke's tangle with the Sand People. The audio on Ben Kenobi's Krayt Dragon call, which scares away the Tusken Raiders, has been amplified and update. You can see photos of the magical rocks and video of the new Krayt Dragon call below.

Photos of the rocks

Four new alterations have been made to Star Wars: Episode VI - Return of the Jedi. Remember Sebulba from Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace, that evil little dick that walks on his hands, who tried to sabotage Anakin's pod racer? He comes from a race of nasty jerks known as the Dug. One of these Dug have been added into the scene inside of Jabba's Palace. We also get a change to the scene where C3PO and R2D2 arrive at Jabba's Palace. George Lucas has enhanced the door to make it look much larger than it is. Further along in the movie, digital effects have now allowed all of the Ewoks to blink. And then, finally, we get the most controversial change of all, Vader screaming, "Nooooooooo!" As he tosses The Emperor to his death. Check out all of these changes in the videos below.

The last major change, which has been widely reported already, is the presence of a CGI Yoda in Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace, which was done to match the way Yoda looks in the next two films, Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones and Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith. You can check out the clip below.

According to The Force.net, Darth Vader's notorious "No!" audio change has been confirmed by Lucasfilm in the New York Times. Another contact at Lucasfilm had this to say about the changes.

"Yes, the updates are confirmed. We hope fans will wait to see for themselves how they fit into the Saga before making any judgments.

Star Wars: The Complete Saga Blu-ray arrives September 16th. Will you buy it or boycott? Whichever the case my be, its obvious that George Lucas doesn't care.

EXCLUSIVE: VFX Legend John Dykstra Praises George Lucas for Tweaking Star Wars: The Complete Saga Blu-ray

Visual Effects supervisor John Dykstra comments on George Lucas tweaking Star War on Blu-ray Visual Effects supervisor John Dykstra comments on George Lucas tweaking Star War on Blu-rayVisual Effects Supervisor John Dykstra is a legend in the business who has worked on such timeless classics as Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope, Spider-Man, and Inglourious Basterds. His latest handiwork can be seen in the exceptional summer superhero adventure X-Men: First Class, arriving on Blu-ray and DVD this Frist Class Friday, September 9th. While discussing this Marvel Mutant prequel, we asked John what he thought about George Lucas tweaking three of the six movies included in Star Wars: The Complete Saga Blu-ray, including his own work in A New Hope.

Some might think otherwise, but John Dykstra is actually okay with his work being changed, tweaked, and even sometimes destroyed by his director. This is what he had to say.

"God love him! He should tweak it until his heart's content. You never finish a movie. It is always pried from your grasping hands. There is always something you can fix. Does it always make it better? Mmm...That is questionable. I think executing something, you make decisions as you execute, in terms of priority. Sometimes those priorities are formed by more than just whether or not it was a good technical execution."

Star Wars: The Complete Saga Blu-ray arrives with its digital facelift on September 16th.
